Osaka Castle vs Himeji Castle

Himeji is the real thing: an original wooden castle from 1609. Osaka Castle is a 1931 tower with a museum inside, but it sits on enormous original stone walls in the middle of the city. You can see both in one day.

Which one should you pick?

  • Only time for one, and you want a real samurai castle: Himeji.
  • Short on time, staying in Osaka, or traveling with small children or someone who can't climb steep stairs: Osaka. The elevator, the museum and the free park make it easy.
  • Love history: both. Osaka is where the Toyotomi family fell in 1615; Himeji shows what a castle of that time looked like inside.
