History

Is Osaka Castle original?

The Main Tower is not. It was rebuilt in concrete in 1931 and is the third tower on the spot. The stone walls and moats in the park date from the Tokugawa rebuilding that began in 1620, and some turrets and gates are original Edo-period buildings.

History

Who built Osaka Castle?

Toyotomi Hideyoshi built the first castle from 1583. After it fell in 1615, the Tokugawa shogunate buried it and built a new castle on top from 1620.

History

Is Osaka Castle worth visiting?

Yes, if you like history, views or Japanese castles. Inside is a modern museum rather than an old interior, but the stone walls, moats and park are the real thing, and the park is free. Skip the inside if you only want photos of the castle.

Is it worth it?

Is Himeji Castle better than Osaka Castle?

They are different. Himeji Castle is an original wooden keep from 1609, a National Treasure and World Heritage Site. Osaka Castle's tower is a 1931 rebuild with a museum and an elevator inside, but it stands on huge original stone walls in the middle of the city. If you can see only one original castle, choose Himeji.
