Osaka Castle elevator line: how to skip it

Yes, you can skip the elevator line. Take the stairs.

At the entrance to the Main Tower, the line splits in two. The left line waits for the elevator. The right line goes straight to the stairs, and on most days you walk right in.

These are estimates, not live counts.

The elevator line is separate from the ticket line. Even with an e-ticket on your phone, you still wait for the elevator. On a busy day you can queue twice: once to buy, once to ride.

How the inside works

The Main Tower has eight floors. Floors 2 to 7 are a museum. Floor 8 is the open-air observation deck.

  • The elevator only goes to the 5th floor. From there, everyone climbs the last three floors on foot.
  • The stairs start on the 1st floor and take you all the way to the 8th.
  • Going down, you walk. The usual route is the 8th floor first, then down through the exhibits floor by floor.

So the stairs only add floors 1 to 5. Everything above that is the same for everyone.

Tips to save time

  1. Come after 16:00 on a weekday. That's the quietest time of the week. Last entry is 17:30.
  2. Don't count on an early start. Weekday mornings are some of the busiest hours, and on weekends the ticket window gets a rush right after the 9:00 opening.
  3. Buy your ticket online. It skips the ticket line, not the elevator line. See Osaka Castle tickets.
  4. Take the stairs. On a busy day, this saves more time than anything else on this list.
